“…neivai has been proposed as a junior synonym of Ny. intermedia by Dyar (1929) and Pinto (1930), a status which was maintained until their differentiation based on morphological and molecular approaches was proposed by Marcondes (1996). The morphological distinction was based mainly on the appearance of the spermathecae and the number of the horizontal teeth of the cibarium of the females, but it was not applicable to the male characteristics, despite the morphometric and artificial neural network analysis undertaken (Marcondes & Borges 2000).…”

“…The head morphology of the Triatomines, in particular the antennal structures and the sensilla, represents an important taxonomic tool, which can be associated with other characteristics, such as the adaptation to speciÞc habitats (Pinto 1930;McIver 1975;Lent and Wygodzinsky 1979;Zacharuk 1980;Chapman 1982;McIver andSiemicki 1984, 1985;RamirezPerez 1987;Carcavallo et al 1994;Catalá 1997aCatalá , 1997bGracco and Catalá 2000).…”

“…Pinto (1926) described Nyssomyia neivai from a male captured inside a house at the Instituto Butantan, municipality of São Paulo. This was later designated as a junior synonym of N. intermedia by Pinto (1930) a view held by most phlebotomine workers until Marcondes (1996) revalidated the name, based on the holotype and on a female collected at Fortim Campero in the department of Tarija, Bolivia.…”
