Arteriolosclerosis differs from venular collagenosis in relation to cerebrovascular parenchymal damages: an autopsy-based study

Abstract: Background and purposeCerebrovascular parenchymal damage is prevalent in ageing brains; however, its vascular aetiology has not been fully elucidated. In addition to the underlying role of sclerotic arterioles, the correlation between collagenised venules has not been clarified. Here, we aimed to investigate the associations between microvascular injuries, including arteriolosclerosis and venular collagenosis, and related parenchymal damages in ageing brains, to investigate the underlying correlations.MethodsW… Show more

“…The association of cardiovascular risk factors with speci cally attention/executive function, and not memory, suggest that there is another pathophysiological mechanism behind this type of cognitive decline. One possible explanation is that these risk factors are more related to arteriolosclerosis (arterial stiffness) and venous collagenosis 35 in the brain, which could contribute to attention/executive impairment. This suggests targeting cardiovascular risk factors in midlife could have greater impact on future attention/executive function, but less so on memory function.…”

“…Although pericyte coverage was not specifically examined, a recent study reported a significant reduction in the number of capillary pericytes in the frontal deep WM, a region most frequently afflicted by cSVD, in postmortem tissues from patients with vascular dementia ( 58 ). Cerebral venules, which are often overlooked, can also display collagenosis (thickening of the walls with collagen), which has been associated with WM lesions ( 55 , 56 ).…”
