Arterial supply of the posterior interventricular sulcus: a CT coronary angiographic study

Abstract: CCTA allows detailed assessment of the arterial supply of the PIS, and allowed to describe 25 subtypes. This information is of potential value to both cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologists who plan bypass surgery or angioplasty aiming at the posterior interventricular artery.

“…In the literature, 86%-87% of the general population show right coronary dominance, while 9%-9.5% show left dominance, and 3%-4% show co-dominance (15,16). Results from our dual LAD series are in accordance with the general population in terms of coronary dominance (89% right-dominance and 11% left dominance), ex- cept for the absence of codominance in this study.…”

“…Due to its three-dimensional nature and the high soft tissue contrast, coronary MDCT angiography is an effective method for imaging the myocardial arterial supply [8] and to determine variations of coronary arterial supply patterns [20]. In this study, we could evaluate SANA and AVNA in all MDCT coronary angiography studies.…”

“…In the study by Ozturk et al ( 8 ) which studied the frequency of different types of dominance is determined that the frequency of left dominance in females was 8.3%, 3.7% with balanced and 88% with the right coronary dominance. Female gender is an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery and is included in most of the scores used for risk calculation ( 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ).…”

“…It is believed that the left coronary dominance is associated with a worse prognosis for patients with acute coronary syndrome and stable coronary artery disease ( 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ).…”
