“…The reported incidence of poststernotomy mediastinitis (PSM) after cardiac surgery is approximately 3%. 1 Despite its low incidence, PSM is associated with high mortality rate (up to 46%), 2 prolonged hospital stay, and increased medical expenses; in addition, PSM adversely affects the long-term survival of these patients.
