Arterial duplex for diagnosis of peripheral arterial emboli

Abstract: Surgical outcomes and survival for patients evaluated by preoperative DUS imaging alone for PAE are equivalent to patients evaluated with CA or CTA. PSVs in the tibiopopliteal arteries may predict the need for fasciotomy. Preoperative DUS imaging alone is sufficient for operative planning in patients with symptoms suggestive of PAE.

“…In our study, DUS was the main utility for the diagnosis of ALI. Crawford et al [9] performed a prospective study and they evaluated the utility of DUS imaging alone for the diagnosis and treatment of ALI. In their study, diagnosis by DUS imaging alone was compared with contrast angiography and CTA.…”

“…44 In a retrospective analysis of 181 patients with ALI, 90 patients were treated based on DUS as the sole pre-operative modality, with similar outcomes to those who had pre-operative DSA and computed tomography angiography (CTA). 45 The clinical applicability of DUS is limited in the acute setting, because it is not always available 24/7.…”

“…Even if the aneurysm is full of thrombosis, the aneurysm diagnosis can be con rmed. Duplex ultrasound therefore only shows the morphological structure of popliteal vessels, but also provides hemodynamic information [16]. It is a non-invasive method that might prove to be of great value in the diagnosis of PVES.…”
