Arterial Dominance in the Hand

Abstract: Arterial pressure was measured simultaneously in the thumb and in the contralateral arm using strain-gauge plethysmography in 100 healthy persons aged 13--43 yr, before and after compression of the radial or the ulnar artery. The radial and ulnar pulses were palpable in all instances. In 29 (14.5%) hands compression of either artery did not reduce the thumb pressure. In 152 (76%) occlusion of the radial artery caused a decrease of more than 10 mm Hg, but never to less than 40 mm Hg. In 91 (45.5%) occlusion of … Show more

“…This was graded as: grade 1, 0-7 s "flush" time, normal; grade 2, 8-14 s, equivocal; grade 3, longer than 15 s, poor or abnormal. In some patients, arterial dominance was noted (Husum and Palm, 1978).…”

“…These include an incomplete SPA, radial artery dominance of the SPA and absence or malformation of the ulnar artery. 7,21 Gellman et al 19 have classified palmar arch into two categories, complete or incomplete. Coleman and Anson 14 observed the complete form in 78.5% and incomplete form in 21.5% of 650 hands.…”

“…The lateral volar side was determined according to the dominant digital vessels, the ulnar side of the thumb and index finger, and the radial side of the little finger. [ 21 , 22 ] Once the tourniquets were applied, pressure sensors were inserted between the tourniquet and the skin (Fig. 3 A and B).…”
