Artemisinin inhibits the development of esophageal cancer by targeting HIF-1α to reduce glycolysis levels

Abstract: Background: China has a high incidence of esophageal cancer (EC), mainly squamous cell carcinoma, which is a serious threat to human life. Previous studies have shown that artemisinin can inhibit the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells, thus inhibiting the progression of cancer. Aerobic glycolysis plays an important role in the uncontrolled growth of tumor cells. However, there are still different opinions on the anti-cancer mechanism, and there have been few studies involving EC. Our pre-experiment f… Show more

“…Interestingly, artemisinin can improve T cell-triggered immune responses, but has limited toxic side effects in other organs [ 497 ]. Metabolic remodeling and ferroptosis regulate artemisinin activities, but the relationship between these processes and the role of MYC requires further evaluation [ 498 , 499 ].…”

“…Metabolic alterations have been shown to regulate the progression and migration of many cancers. Inhibition of glycolysis inhibits the progression of esophageal cancer, 144 while promotion of glycolysis increases colorectal cancer metastasis 145 . Cancer stem cells tend to exhibit increased OXPHOS 146 .…”
