Introduction: Traditional animal- and mineral-based medicines are widely used in the Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia junction zone, a region with diverse ethnic groups and cultures. This study aims to document, conserve, and explore the potential of these medicines for further research and sustainable development of ethnic medicine.Methods: We interviewed 56 informants from different ethnic backgrounds and analyzed their responses quantitatively. Additionally, a comparative analysis with adjacent regions was conducted, providing invaluable contextual insights.Results: The study unveiled a diverse array of traditional medicines in the Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia junction zone. A total of 47 animal-based medicines were identified, ranging from insects and scorpios to distinctive animal organs. Of notable significance was Moschus, emerging as a pivotal traditional Chinese medicine resource. In parallel, 12 mineral-based medicines were cataloged, procured both locally and from “pharmacies”. Female informants, frequently local herbal practitioners, demonstrated broader knowledge of medicines. The analysis of 13 villages revealed varying perceptions of medicine importance, underscoring the wealth of traditional knowledge. Specific medicines, such as Feng-Mi and Xie-Zi, were widely used and valued in local healthcare practices for their cultural and medicinal benefits.Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive overview of traditional animal- and mineral-based medicines in the Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia junction zone. It highlights the need for preserving and applying these practices in a sustainable manner. It also lays a solid foundation for future research on ethnic medicine, which can contribute to the holistic wellbeing of local communities.

Arsenic is ubiquitous toxic metalloid responsible for many human diseases all over the world. Contrastingly, Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) has been suggested as efficient antioxidant in various liver diseases. However, there are no reports of the effects of UDCA on arsenious acid [As(III)]-induced hepatotoxicity. The objective of this study is to elucidate the protective actions of UDCA on As(III)-induced hepatotoxicity and explore its controlling role in biomolecular mechanisms in vivo and in vitro. The remarkable liver damage induced by As(III) was ameliorated by treatment with UDCA, as reflected by reduced histopathological changes of liver and elevation of serum AST, ALT levels. UDCA play a critical role in stabilization of cellular membrane potential, inhibition of apoptosis and LDH leakage in LO2 cells. Meanwhile, the activities of SOD, CAT and GSH-Px and the level of TSH, GSH were enhanced with UDCA administration, while the accumulations of intracellular ROS, MDA and rate of GSSG/GSH were decreased in vivo and in vitro. Further study disclosed that UDCA significantly inhibited As(III)-induced apoptosis through increasing the expression of Bcl-2 and decreasing the expression of Bax, p53, Cyt C, Cleaved caspase-3 and 9. Moreover, UDCA promoted the expression of nuclear Nrf2, HO-1, and NQO1, although arsenic regulated nuclear translocation of Nrf2 positively. When Nrf2 was silenced, the protective effect of UDCA was abolished. Collectively, the results of this study showed that UDCA protects hepatocytes antagonize As(III)-induced cytotoxicity, and its mechanism may be related to activation of Nrf2 signaling.

For liver fibrosis assessment, the liver biopsy is usually stained with Masson’s trichrome (MT) or picrosirius red (PSR) to quantify liver connective tissue (LCT) for fibrosis scoring. However, several concerns of such semiquantitative assessments have been raised, and when searching for data on the amount of LCT in healthy rats, the results vastly differ. Regarding the ongoing reproducibility crisis in science, it is necessary to inspect the results and methods, and to design an unbiased and reproducible method of LCT assessment. We searched the Medline database using search terms related to liver fibrosis, LCT and collagen, rat strains, and staining methods. Our search identified 74 eligible rat groups in 57 studies. We found up to 170-fold differences in the amount of LCT among healthy Wistar and Sprague–Dawley rats, with significant differences even within individual studies. Biased sampling and quantification probably caused the observed differences. In addition, we also found incorrect handling of liver fibrosis scoring. Assessment of LCT using stereological sampling methods (such as systematic uniform sampling) would provide us with unbiased data. Such data could eventually be used not only for the objective assessment of liver fibrosis but also for validation of noninvasive methods of the assessment of early stages of liver fibrosis.
