“…The concentrations of Sb and As in the soils were within the ranges of soil Sb reported in previous studies He, 2007;Liu et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2011;Wei et al, 2011), thus demonstrating significant enrichment in Sb. As an element that accompanies Sb, the concentration of As is elevated in the XKS mining area due to human activities.…”

“…Antimony mining in this area began in 1897, and the present annual production of Sb is 55,000 tons of ore and 40,000 tons of Sb products (Wang et al, 2011). The long-term, large-scale Sb mining and smelting activities have resulted in Sb, As and other heavy metal contamination of the local environment (Fu and Wei, 2013;He, 2007;Liu et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2011;Wei et al, 2011). The concentrations of Sb in the soils have been measured at 100.6-5045 mg/kg; soil near the Sb mine also contains high concentrations of As (Fu and Wei, 2013;Wei et al, 2011).…”

“…Many studies have been carried out in this area to understand the environmental behavior of Sb (Basnet et al, 2014;Fu et al, 2010;He, 2007;Liu et al, 2011;Liu et al, 2010;Okkenhaug et al, 2012;Qi et al, 2011;Wang et al, 2011;Wei et al, 2011;Wu et al, 2011). However, systematic comparison research focused on behavior between As and Sb in different environmental compartments are limited.…”

“…Our previous study had found soils and waters in the vicinity of a Sb mine (Xikuangshan (XKS), Hunan province, China) had been contaminated by As, Sb, and Bi, with elevated As, Sb in waters, algal and fish [28]. In addition, As, Sb, and Bi in the hair of residents around the mining area were much higher than those from nonmining areas, indicating the residents around the mine are under risks of these metalloids [29]. Since As, Sb, and Bi occur simultaneously in XKS, the objectives of this study is to (1) characterize the uptake and accumulation of As, Sb, and Bi by plants and (2) to compare the similarities and differences in the uptake and accumulation of these metalloids by plants.…”
