Arrival of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1895) in Vienna, Austria and initial monitoring activities

Abstract: Aedes albopictus was recorded in Vienna, Austria, in August 2020 for the first time. The species was found to occur in three sites within the city; morphology‐based monitoring was followed by DNA‐barcoding. Mitochondrial COI barcode sequences recovered three different haplotypes, however this data does not reveal whether single or multiple introduction events have occurred. The vicinity of Viennese Ae. albopictus sites to major traffic routes highlights the importance of passive transport for range expansion o… Show more

“…In the same year in August, Ae. albopictus was also detected by citizens for the first time in the city of Vienna [ 16 ], approximately 30 km away from the motorway rest stop Hochleithen. Thus, the location at Hochleithen is a likely stopover documenting from where the introduction of this mosquito species into Vienna occurred.…”

“…For example, our monitoring missed the first occurrence of Ae. albopictus in Vienna [ 16 ]. Thus, to establish an Austrian-wide early warning system for the detection of AIM species, the number of sampling sites should be increased in the future.…”
