Arrhythmias in the setting of hematopoietic cell transplants

Abstract: Prior studies report 9–27% of persons receiving a hematopoietic cell transplant develop arrhythmias, but the effect on outcomes is largely unknown. We reviewed data from 1177 consecutive patients {greater than or equal to}40 years old receiving a hematopoietic cell transplant at one center during 1999–2009. Transplant indication was predominately leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Overall, 104 patients were found to have clinically significant arrhythmia: 43 prior to and 61 following transplant. Post-tra… Show more

“…Excessive intravenous fluid administration, as being a part of the treatment protocol, has also been documented as a contributing factor to AF. 18 One study demonstrated that meticulous fluid and weight management during the post-transplant period reduces the incidence of AF. 19 Increased in autonomic nervous system stimulation and adrenergic drive, mediated by cytokines release or intravascular volume alteration, also promote the occurrence of AF during the peri-transplantation period.…”
