Array of virtual Frisch-grid CZT detectors with common cathode readout and pulse-height correction

Abstract: We present our new results from testing 15-mm-long virtual Frisch-grid CdZnTe detectors with a common-cathode readout for correcting pulse-height distortions. The array employs parallelepiped-shaped CdZnTe (CZT) detectors of a large geometrical aspect ratio, with two planar contacts on the top and bottom surfaces (anode and cathode) and an additional shielding electrode on the crystal's sides to create the virtual Frisch-grid effect. We optimized the geometry of the device and improved its spectral response. W… Show more

“…2). Alternative materials often used for the insulating layer are ultra-thin polyester [41] and Teflon tape [46]. After the application of an insulating layer on the walls, the Frisch-ring was made by tightly wrapping a selfadhesive thin cooper foil on the cathode side of the walls (see Figs.…”

“…CZT is a high density target (5.78 g/cm 3 ) and can provide an energy resolution close to that of Ge at room temperature, with submillimiter spatial resolution. CZT virtual Frisch-grid detector bars (6 × 6 × 20 mm 3 ) [8] reduce the impact of defects and allow for sub-mm spatial resolution and for energy resolution <1% at 662 keV even with lower-quality crystals. For these reasons, the CZT calorimeter is also especially suitable for the detection of gamma ray decay lines.…”

“…However, due to the structure based on a large single crystal, there is a limitation that the cost dramatically increased as increase of the crystal size. To overcome this problem, an array type detector which was comprised of individual virtual Frisch-grid CZTs was proposed [7][8][9]. Those small but high yielding components make the total price lower than that of monolithic detectors.…”
