Grafting has become an imperative for intensive vegetable production since chlorofluorocarbon-based soil fumigants were banned from use on grounds of environmental protection. Compelled by this development, research into rootstock–scion interaction has broadened the potential applications of grafting in the vegetable industry beyond aspects of soil phytopathology. Grafting has been increasingly tapped for cultivation under adverse environs posing abiotic and biotic stresses to vegetable crops, thus enabling expansion of commercial production onto otherwise under-exploited land. Vigorous rootstocks have been employed not only in the open field but also under protected cultivation where increase in productivity improves distribution of infrastructural and energy costs. Applications of grafting have expanded mainly in two families: the Cucurbitaceae and the Solanaceae, both of which comprise major vegetable crops. As the main drives behind the expansion of vegetable grafting have been the resistance to soilborne pathogens, tolerance to abiotic stresses and increase in yields, rootstock selection and breeding have accordingly conformed to the prevailing demand for improving productivity, arguably at the expense of fruit quality. It is, however, compelling to assess the qualitative implications of this growing agronomic practice for human nutrition. Problems of impaired vegetable fruit quality have not infrequently been associated with the practice of grafting. Accordingly, the aim of the current review is to reassess how the practice of grafting and the prevalence of particular types of commercial rootstocks influence vegetable fruit quality and, partly, storability. Physical, sensorial and bioactive aspects of quality are examined with respect to grafting for watermelon, melon, cucumber, tomato, eggplant, and pepper. The physiological mechanisms at play which mediate rootstock effects on scion performance are discussed in interpreting the implications of grafting for the configuration of vegetable fruit physicochemical quality and nutritive value.

A methodology for making consistent studies of outliers of non-climacteric melon volatile organic compounds at harvest is reported. The juice was squeezed from the fruit of the 'Piel de sapo' cultivar harvested during two consecutive seasons and the aroma volatiles were extracted by headspace solid phase microextraction and measured by gas chromatography coupled to mass-spectrometry. A deconvolution analysis was performed to obtain volatile organic compounds. For multivariate the reliable identification of outliers, compound classes were studied as a percentage of total area counts of the melon compounds identified in the chromatogram by principal component analysis and partial least-squares discriminant analysis, and then verified by correlation analysis, box-whisker plot, and formal tests for univariate outliers. Principal component analysis was the key methodology for selecting outliers in variables that mostly did not follow a normal distribution. The presence of an excess in terms of relative percentage of area and the diversity of minor compounds such as alcohols, terpenes, acids, among others, are usually a sign of anomalous data that can be considered outliers in the aroma of this non-climacteric cultivar. This multivariate approach removed outliers, but kept the variability of aroma among the samples of every cultivar.

Cociente fototermal en melón y su relación con la concentración de azúcares en los frutos Photothermal Recibido 24 julio 2015. Aceptado 8 septiembre 2015. ResumenEl objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de la radiación y la temperatura a través de un cociente fototermal sobre la acumulación de azúcar en melón. Se realizaron experimentos al aire libre en tres años consecutivos, utilizándose el híbrido ´HD Nº1´, una variedad de tipo ´Honey Dew´. Los experimentos se realizaron en cuatro localidades de la región central de Argentina: Concordia, Esperanza, Media Agua y Colonia Fiscal. Al momento de la cosecha fueron medidos los grados Brix (SST) de los frutos. Se calculó el cociente fototermal (CF) a través de la relación entre la radiación incidente media (MJ m -2 d -1 ) y la temperatura media diaria (ºC) a la que se sustrajo la temperatura base del cultivo. La relación obtenida entre la concentración de SST (%) y el CF (MJ m -2 d -1 ºC -1 ) fue lineal positiva. La pendiente de la recta permitió deducir que por cada unidad de incremento del CF representó un incremento de poco más de 4,0 % de SST. Por otra parte, este modelo lineal explica el 63 % de la variabilidad en la concentración de SST debida al efecto del CF. Finalmente, para lograr un incremento de los SST se discute la importancia de los resultados obtenidos para orientar la implantación del cultivo de manera que el desarrollo de los frutos coincida con el período de mayor valor de CF.Palabras clave: Cucumis melo L.; sólidos solubles totales; radiación solar; temperatura. AbstractThe aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of solar radiation and temperature on the sugar melon fruit using the photothermal quotient. Outdoor experiments were conducted in three successive years, using the hybrid cultivar 'HD Nº1'. The experiments were conducted at four sites in the central region of Argentina: Concordia, Esperanza, Media Agua and Colonia Fiscal. At the time of harvest were measured Total Soluble Solid (TSS) of fruits. The photothermal quotient (PQ) was calculated through the relationship between the average incident radiation (MJ m -2 d -1 ) and the average daily temperature (°C) at which base temperature was subtracted. The relationship obtained between TSS (%) and the PQ (MJ m -2 d -1 °C -1 ) was lineal positive. The slope of the line allowed deduce that for every unit increase in the PQ represented an increase of just over 4.0% of TSS. Moreover, this model explains 63% of the variability in the TSS due to the effect of PQ. Finally, to increase the TTS the importance of the results is discussed, for guiding the crop establishment so that fruits development coincides with the period of greatest value PQ.
