Arms and The Man: A Response to Dale Martin’s ‘Jesus in Jerusalem: Armed and Not Dangerous’

Abstract: Did Jesus oppose the temple? Did he predict its destruction? Against the recent proposals of Dale Martin, this article argues that the evidence is controvertible. However, the article does agree that Jesus’ followers were probably armed with μάχαιραι; but so was a significant proportion of Jerusalem’s male population, specifically at Passover. These ‘arms’, then, cannot explain Jesus’ arrest and execution.

“…Instead, she notes that the term can legitimately be translated ‘knife’—as we can see, for example, when μάχαιρα is used in the LXX to translate the Hebrew term מַאֲכֶלֶת in Gen. 22.6 and 10, the knife that Abraham was prepared to use to sacrifice Isaac (and may also have used to cut the wood that he placed him upon; Gen. 22.3). Given that it was Passover, Fredriksen believes that it was unsurprising that the disciples possessed such things (Fredriksen 2015: 323). 74…”

“…Demikian juga menurut Fredriksen, yang menyebut legiun Romawi yang menjadi aktor utama kehancuran Bait Suci berdasarkan tafsiran Lukas 19:43 dan 21:20. 45 Dalam Injil Yohanes juga secara eksplisit menghubungkan kedua peristiwa itu, kehancuran Bait Suci menjadi semacam ramalan sengsara (Yoh. 2:19) dan secara spesifik menyebut Roma sebagai agen perusak (Yoh.…”

“…With that view in mind, Rome could have interpreted Jesus' "movement" as politically dangerous. 76 During the first century BCE, the Romans employed crucifixion not so much towards Roman citizens, but towards foreign slaves convicted of crimes, political captives, rebels or fugitives. 77 Although Jesus claimed that he did not come to obliterate the OT laws and the prophets, but to fulfil them (Matt.5:17) which is also demonstrated by his encouragement towards the payment of tax , there are numerous places in the NT where Jesus actually disagreed with the teachings of the Law.…”
