Armillifer armillatus infection

Abstract: We report a case of human pentastomiasis in a 70-year-old retired long-distance driver/farmer whose diagnosis was made incidentally while being investigated for a 1-month history of cough and abdominal pain. The chest X-ray revealed multiple comma-shaped and rounded opacities in keeping with Armillifer infection, most likely Armillifer armillatus. “…Computed tomograpic scans and conventional radiographs of the first two patients revealed extensive crescentic calcific lesions in the lungs, peritoneum and liver, with highest concentration in the right hypochondrial regions which is consistent with the findings of earlier authors [ 14 , 16 ]. These radiological features are diagnostic and pathognomonic of Armillifer infestation [ 14 , 16 , 19 ]. Some patients with pentastosomiasis may have deranged liver function test parameters.…”

“…This may be due to high residual functional capability of the liver as documented by other authors [ 20 ]. Liver biopsy is required as complementary investigation tool necessary to diagnose Pentastosomiasis [ 16 , 19 ], but our patients did not consent to it.…”

“…Infection is caused by intake of contaminated water sources, vegetation, raw meat of infected intermediate hosts, or close contact with secretion of infected dogs or livestock [ 2 , 6 , 7 ]. Pentastomes commonly infect the respiratory system, and human soft tissue infections have been noticed at the lung [ 8 , 9 ], nasal cavity [ 10 – 12 ], eye [ 13 15 ], oropharynx [ 4 , 16 ], and other viscera [ 3 , 5 , 6 , 17 , 18 ]. Unlike soft tissue infection, intraosseous pentastomiasis has not been reported yet.…”
