is a region in the west of Extremadura in Spain, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Gredos. Its architecture was designed for a rural way of life about to disappear. Three municipalities declared Historic and Artistic Sites were studied to define and explain their design and construction systems. A wooden frame structure is typical in the region, which uses sun-dried bricks in the infills and leaves the wooden structure visible from the outside. Its composite materials, clay and wood, subject to water and sun damage, are made resistant to weather via an extremely intelligent, skilled combination of wood, clay, pigments, lime mortars and paint. Verata´s wood frame structure is explained in detail, with every element named and how it works. Unique to these structures is the use of different elements as counterweights, which is considered a safety measure. Foundations built on granite and clay transfer moisture up the walls which results in the way in which paint and mortars are found. They have a clay or lime base, combined with pigments. The mixtures and application techniques have been documented from oral transmission. The selection of the base material of paint and mortars depends on their ventilation capacity and which waterproof or disinfection properties are required. Pigments are used as additives to increase these properties while obtaining the colour required. Nowadays, facilities to allow ventilation and sunlight are needed. This makes us question how all the applied knowledge developed over centuries can be preserved. This symbiosis of technique, design, structural knowledge, and close material use is the essence of Verata´s architecture.

Suitable graphic documentation is essential to ascertain and conserve architectural heritage. For the first time, accurate digital images are provided of a 16th-century wooden ceiling, composed of geometric interlacing patterns, in the Pinelo Palace in Seville. Today, this ceiling suffers from significant deformation. Although there are many publications on the digital documentation of architectural heritage, no graphic studies on this type of deformed ceilings have been presented. This study starts by providing data on the palace history concerning the design of geometric interlacing patterns in carpentry according to the 1633 book by López de Arenas, and on the ceiling consolidation in the 20th century. Images were then obtained using two complementary procedures: from a 3D laser scanner, which offers metric data on deformations; and from photogrammetry, which facilitates the visualisation of details. In this way, this type of heritage is documented in an innovative graphic approach, which is essential for its conservation and/or restoration with scientific foundations and also to disseminate a reliable digital image of the most beautiful ceiling of this Renaissance palace in southern Europe.

La arquitectura valenciana vivió un momento de esplendor durante los siglos XIV, XV y XVI en un tiempo de desarrollo económico, en correspondencia con la expansión por el Mediterráneo de la Corona de Aragón. Personajes nobles construyen casas señoriales y palacios que destacan por su riqueza arquitectónica, y acabados decorativos. Entre ellos cabe señalar los dibujos geométricos de la carpintería de sus puertas y ventanas, que resultan característicos de este tipo de edificio en la época y entorno geográfico mencionado. En algunos casos pueden suponerse originales, pero dadas sus características, es un elemento que ha podido sufrir renovaciones y sustituciones, en algunos casos datadas en el siglo XX. Se presenta una aportación a su conocimiento, aplicando una metodología de análisis de los trazados decorativos, que puede ser complementaria a estudios de tipo histórico, dentro de un enfoque multidisciplinar. A partir de un número representativo de casos se analiza la generación de formas en base a las teselaciones regulares y semirregulares, descubriéndose un variado repertorio. Ello permite establecer una clasificación y descripción de los distintos tipos, que se definen gráficamente y se ilustran con ejemplos de aplicación concreta y de adaptación a las formas de las portadas y ventanales.
