We present new viscosity and equation of state (EoS) results extending to high pressures for oterphenyl, salol, and dibutylphthalate. Using these and data from the literature, we show that the three liquids all conform to density scaling; that is, their reduce viscosities and reorientational relaxation times are a function of the ratio of temperature and density with the latter raised to a constant. Moreover, the functional form of the dependence on this ratio is independent of the experimental probe of the dynamics. This means that there is no decoupling of the viscosities and relaxation times over the measured range of conditions. Previous literature at odds with these results were based on erroneous extrapolations of the EoS or problematic diamond anvil viscosity data. Thus, there are no exceptions to the experimental fact that every non-associated liquid complies with density scaling with an invariant scaling exponent.

Since its initial discovery more than fifteen years ago, the thermodynamical scaling of the dynamics of supercooled liquids has been used to provide many new important insights in the physics of liquids, particularly on the link between dynamics and intermolecular potential. A question that has long been discussed is whether the scaling exponent  is a constant or it depends on pressure. Here we offer a simple method to determine the pressure dependence of  using only the pressure dependence of the glass transition and the equation of state.Using this new method we find that for the six non-associated liquids investigated  always decreases with increasing pressure. Importantly in all cases the value of  remains always larger than 4. Liquids having  closer to 4 at low pressure show a smaller change in  with pressure. We argue that this result has very important consequences for the experimental determination of the functional form of the repulsive part of the potential in liquids.

De Sphaera of Johannes De Sacrobosco in the Early Modern Period

André do Avelar was the mathematics professor of University of Coimbra from 1592 to 1616. During his lifetime he published two astronomical works: a popular vernacular book called Reportorio dos tempos (1585) and Sphaerae vtrivsque tabella (1593). Avelar's Sphaera, composed for use at the university, was the only Latin version of Sacrobosco's work ever published in Portugal. Avelar's book was inspired by Sacrobosco's work and followed it closely, but it might be regarded as a new work, because he changed the wording and the order of presentation of the topics, added new information and several tables. After his retirement, Avelar was accused of Jewish beliefs and practices, and was condemned by the Inquisition in 1620, dying in prison. This paper analyzes Avelar's life, his work at the University of Coimbra, the content and role of his Sphaera, his career, and his trial by the Inquisition.
