Argusides B and C, Two New Cytotoxic Triterpene Glycosides from the Sea Cucumber Bohadschia argusJaeger

Abstract: Two new triterpene glycosides, argusides B and C (1 and 2, resp.), have been isolated from the sea cucumber Bohadschia argus Jaeger collected in the South China Sea. Their structures have been established by spectral analysis (2D-NMR and ESI-MS) and chemical evidence. Compounds 1 and 2 both possess a holostane-type triterpene aglycone with a C(9)==C(11) bond and a OH group at C(12), but differ in their substituents at C(17) and the hexasaccharide moiety. The two glycosides exhibited significant cytotoxicities … Show more

“…Another study also showed that stichoposide C (isolated from the holothurian Thelenota anax) caused apoptosis in A549, HCT-116, and MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner due to the activation of Fas and caspase-8, cleavage of Bid, mitochondrial damage, and caspase-3 activation ( 40 ).…”

“…For example, arguside A dramatically affects human colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116) cells (IC 50 = 0.14 μM) [ 61 ]. Argusides B and C also demonstrate potent efficacy against adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549), HCT-116, Hep-G2, and human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines with IC 50 values of 0.48 and 0.43 μg/mL, respectively, on A549 with 0.46 and 0.38 μg/mL, respectively, on HCT-116 [ 62 ]. Argusides D and E were shown to be very effective regarding all aforementioned human tumor cell lines [ 63 ].…”

“…They are reported primarily as typical metabolites of terrestrial plants [25]. A few marine species belonging to the phylum Echinodermata [26] namely holothuroids (sea cucumbers) [7,10,13,27,28,29,30,31,32,33] and asteroids, and sponges from the phylum Porifera [13,34,35] produce saponins.…”
