The role dermatologists have played throughout the history of laser development is an extremely vital one. The initial interests of Dr. Leon Goldman stimulated many other individual dermatologists to further his work and develop surgical techniques using newer laser systems to provide more effective treatment for patients with a variety of skin diseases. The long list of current cutaneous laser applications developed by dermatologists makes it virtually certain that members of our specialty will continue to play a significant future role in the refinement of laser instrumentation and operative techniques that are inevitable to occur.

“…Im Gegensatz zu systemisch wirksamen Therapieverfahren ist der Erfolg der Bestrahlung nicht vom Immunstatus des Patienten abhängig und wirkt sich umgekehrt nicht negativ auf diesen aus [4,5,8,9]. Im Vergleich zu anderen Therapieverfahren wie Exzision, Kryo-oder Lasertherapie und intraläsionale Applikation von Chemotherapeutika [1,9,18,22,23,26,27,31] können mit dieser Methode am gesamten Integument wesentlich größere Tumorfelder behandelt werden. Fractionated irradiation with X-rays or megavoltage is an important therapeutic option in the palliative treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma. We report on three HIV patients demonstrating bullous cutaneous eruptions in the irradiation field. Three homosexual men (age 45-60 y) stage of disease CDC 3C, were treated with fractionated soft X-rays with the scheme conventionally used by us (total dose 30 Gy, single doses 3 Gy). Immediately to three days after completion of treatment large blisters appeared within the irradiation field, resolving after 2-4 weeks, leaving post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The cause of this rare reaction to soft X-ray therapy, potentially suggesting an individually altered radiation sensitivity, is so far unknown. Controlled prospective studies applying different fractionation schemes will be necessary to better elucidate this issue.

For these neoplasms, the argon laser may be preferable to that of the continuous‐wave dye or copper vapor lasers in view of the fact that higher energy densities may be emitted with this laser, allowing for the treatment of thicker tumors that may require greater thermal damage for complete obliteration.…”

The past decade has seen a dramatic increase in the use of lasers for the treatment of dermatologic disorders. A variety of laser systems has been found to be useful in the treatment of numerous conditions found in the nail unit. The vascular lesions of the nail unit have been treated with the pulsed dye, tunable dye, copper vapor, argon, and carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers. Pigmented lesions noted in the nail unit have been effectively treated with the Q-switched ruby, copper vapor, argon, and pulsed dye lasers. The CO2 laser has been widely used for the treatment of benign and premalignant neoplasms of the nail unit as well as inflammatory processes. Investigational lasers, such as the gold vapor and excimer lasers, may provide clinical benefits for diseases of the nail unit in the near future. The potential advantages of laser surgery of the nail unit include the selective destruction of vascular and pigmented tissue as well as precise tissue destruction.
