Argon assisted chemical vapor deposition of CrO2: An efficient process leading to high quality epitaxial films

Abstract: A comparative study of the structural, microstructural and magnetic properties of CrO 2 thin films grown onto (110) and (100) TiO 2 rutile single crystal substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), using CrO 3 as chromium precursor and either oxygen or argon as carrier gas is presented. Our results show that growth under argon carrier gas leads to high quality CrO 2 epilayers with structural and magnetic properties similar to those obtained using the more standard oxygen carrier gas. Furthermore, we interpr… Show more

“…Chromium dioxide (CrO 2 ), also known as Magtrieve™, is an extremely interesting metal oxide that can be easily removed from the reaction medium because of its heterogeneous nature and ferromagnetic properties [ 17 ]. CrO 2 films and nanostructures are also important in spintronic applications [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Because of its exceptional properties as a magnetic storage medium, it is widely used in audio, video, and computer technology [ 22 ].…”

“…According to binary alloy phase diagrams, 19 researchers have proposed a common theorem that CrO 2 epitaxial films can only be manufactured under enough high oxygen pressure, where O 2 is usually used as the carrier gas to avoid the formation of Cr 2 O 3 . 20 Most recently, Duarte 21 et al obtained (110) oriented pure CrO 2 films on TiO 2 substrates using argon as a carrier gas, suggesting that an oxygen rich atmosphere may not be necessary for the growth of purely-phase CrO 2 films. However, in the Duarte's study, pure (100) oriented CrO 2 films were not obtained, and the growth temperature was not decreased.…”

“…Ultrafine Ge-monopnictides are one important material that has a great potential to be used as solid-state lighting, sensors, and other new type of electronic and optoelectronic devices 27 , 28 . Several methods have been developed for the preparation of nano-sized materials, such as solution-phase chemical reduction 29 , pulsed laser deposition 30 , 31 , and chemical or physical vapor deposition 32 . Currently, one way to produce metal nanoparticles is the inert gas condensation (IGC) method.…”
