Arginine Nutrition in Neonatal Pigs

Abstract: The concentration of arginine (an essential amino acid for neonates) in sow's milk is remarkably low, and thus endogenous synthesis of arginine plays a crucial role in maintaining arginine homeostasis in milk-fed piglets. Paradoxically, intestinal synthesis of citrulline from glutamine/glutamate and proline (the endogenous source of arginine) declines markedly in 7- to 21-d-old suckling pigs, compared with 1- to 3-d-old pigs. Therefore, plasma concentrations of arginine and its immediate precursors (ornithine … Show more

“…Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid for pregnant and lactating sows and newborn piglets, and is important for the growth and development of the fetus and neonate [9][10][11]. A high-fat diet and arginine supplementation were recently reported by Jobgen et al to differentially regulate gene expression and affect energy-substrate oxidation, redox state, fat accretion, and adipocyte differentiation in adipose tissue, and a beneficial effect of arginine on ameliorating diet-induced obesity in rats was demonstrated [33].…”

“…Arginine is an essential amino acid for pregnant sows and newborn piglets, and is required for fetal and neonatal growth and development [9][10][11]. Arginine supplementation has been reported to increase the IMF content of the longissimus dorsi, while decreasing carcass fat content in growing-finishing pigs [12].…”

“…It is established [30], that L-citrulline of intestinal enterocytes of mammals is almost a unique source of endogenous arginine. In the intestinal cells citrulline is produced as the end product of glutamine/glutamate metabolism under the influence of urea cycle enzymes -carbamoyl phosphate synthase and ornithine carbamoyl transferase, and then it is carried with blood to kidneys.…”

“…2C and 2D). Arguing in proof of such a hypothesis is the observation that orally administered L-arginine supplementation significantly improves patient status in a series of different pathological conditions associated with immune dysfunctions, including in pre-term neonates (Wu et al, 2004), without increasing urea Fig. 3.…”
