Area-Based Approach for Mapping and Monitoring Riverine Vegetation Using Mobile Laser Scanning

Abstract: Vegetation plays an important role in stabilizing the soil and decreasing fluvial erosion. In certain cases, vegetation increases the accumulation of fine sediments. Efficient and accurate methods are required for mapping and monitoring changes in the fluvial environment. Here, we develop an area-based approach for mapping and monitoring the vegetation structure along a river channel. First, a 2 × 2 m grid was placed over the study area. Metrics describing vegetation density and height were derived from mobile… Show more

“…On a larger scale, in a 2 × 2 m grid, MLS point clouds can be classified as bare, field, shrubs, and canopy layer using point cloud statistics (mean height, 95th percentile, [46]). Laser pulse intensity values are used to classify buildings and trees [47], and tree species [48], or the stem (wood material) and foliage of woody vegetation [45].…”

“…In MLS, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and inertia measurement units (IMUs) linked to the scanning system, allow a collection of point clouds during movement. MLS platforms can vary from backpack to logging machine [15,16]. The drawbacks of laser scanning systems are related to the price of the required equipment (20,000 € or more for TLS) and the limited number of commercial programs for data processing of the point cloud data.…”

“…Tais efeitos causam alterações locais e globais, sendo o seu entendimento ainda limitado (Jia et al, 2014). Para entender as alterações em escala local dos diversos componentes da paisagem, são necessários dados com resolução espacial métrica ou, se disponível, submétrica (Flener et al, 2013;Saarinen et al, 2013).…”
