Computer-based assessment of exams provides teachers and students with two main benefits: fairness and effectiveness in the evaluation process. This paper proposes a fully automatic evaluation tool for the Graphic and Virtual Design curriculum at the First School of Architecture of the Politecnico di Torino, Italy. In particular, the tool is designed for the 3D modeling course, taught during the second year, where students have to prove their ability to model static scenes using the open source modeler Blender. During the final exam, students are required to create a 3D model as similar as possible to a reference object proposed by the teacher and shown through a set of 2D views; the similarity of the images is judged according to both model shape and materials. The traditional assessment process is particularly slow and strongly based on teachers subjective evaluation; the proposed solution efficiently implements an objective assessment mechanism that exploits computer vision and image analysis algorithms to automatically extract similarity indices. These indices are related to partial evaluation grades, which are then combined to obtain the final mark. A comparison with the traditional assessment process shows robustness and trustworthiness of the designed approach.

The mechanical engineering department at Clemson University reevaluated its undergraduate laboratory experience and focused on improving various aspects of the three required laboratory courses. The faculty believe that these laboratory courses are a defining feature of the bachelor of science degree, as many graduates accept entry-level manufacturing positions or pursue graduate studies. The mechanical engineering laboratory courses at Clemson are stand-alone offerings in the undergraduate program, in contrast those schools which attach the labs to select courses. This structure allows a variety of experiments to be offered during each course, which can encompass various scientific and engineering topics. This paper reviews various changes to the laboratories, describes their implementation and presents evidence of their effectiveness. Examples of the improvements were: the development of printed manuals for both students and teaching assistants, the development of a unified training program for the teaching assistants, the introduction of new laboratory equipment and experiments, and revision of the current laboratory documentation. To evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented changes, survey results were analyzed. Overall, student satisfaction with the course improved significantly, as evidenced by the survey results.

The new curricula derived from the Bologna process encourage continuous evaluations during the teaching period. This situation causes already depleted teachers to have an additional workload during the course, so the emergence of tools that automatically evaluate this work is necessary. In computer science, the ideal evaluation technique would be to use automatic code evaluators (such as C, Java, C++, etc.). The main objective of this work is to analyze whether the use of C‐coding self‐assessment exercises correlates with an improvement in exam performance. For this purpose, the implementation of self‐assessment exercises on the AulaWeb platform during the last 12 academic years (2010/2011–2021/2022) in a Programming Fundamentals course (Fundamentos de Programación) in an engineering faculty at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) was collected. The main tasks carried out in this research have been: (i) recovery and analysis of the information collected from the AulaWeb platform and (ii) the study of the influence of the self‐assessment exercises on the final grades obtained by the students of the course through correlations. The most important findings are: (a) self‐assessment exercises generate experience and confidence when facing problems (this situation translates into a higher probability of passing the course) and (b) self‐assessment exercises influence the final exams taken at the end of the semester, mainly due to the short time between the end of classes and the exam. Self‐assessment exercises provide valuable information for teachers to monitor the progress of large groups of students during the semester and for students to pass exams.
