Are We There Yet? Exploring the Impact of Translating Cognitive Tests for Dementia Using Mobile Technology in an Aging Population

Abstract: This study examines implications of the expanded use of mobile platforms in testing cognitive function, and generates evidence on the impact utilizing mobile platforms for dementia screen. The Saint Louis University Mental State examination (SLUMS) was ported onto a computerized mobile application named the Cambridge University Pen to Digital Equivalence assessment (CUPDE). CUPDE was piloted and compared to the traditional pen and paper version, with a common comparator test for both groups. Sixty healthy part… Show more

“…However, with the introduction of an additional digital interface, it is important to minimize possible interference with user's cognitive faculties that can potentially influence results. Thus, there is an increasing emphasis on validation and assessment of psychometric properties of computerized tests to minimize the risk of conflicting results and maintain equivalence between traditional and digital formats [11] . From a clinical and research standpoint, validated computerized tests along with their equivalent examiner-based tests offer practicality and flexibility to use either format that may increase the number of individuals being screened.…”

“…There have recently been digital translations of traditional brief pen and paper cognitive tests [57, 76]. It is clear from these attempts that the digital translation needs to be separately validated from the pen and paper version [57].…”

“…However, with the advent of tablet and smart-phone touch screen mobile devices, older participants have found engaging in VR tasks much easier and intuitive than with desktop computers [8,9]. As a consequence, mobile devices has recently been used in several fields such as neuropsychological assessment [10], stroke rehabilitation [11] and mental health [12]. We recently developed a VR navigation task for mobile and tablet devices -Sea Hero Quest -with aim that this may provide an early diagnostic for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) [13].…”
