Are We There Yet? Data Saturation in Qualitative Research

Abstract: Failure to reach data saturation has an impact on the quality of the research conducted and hampers content validity. The aim of a study should include what determines when data saturation is achieved, for a small study will reach saturation more rapidly than a larger study. Data saturation is reached when there is enough information to replicate the study when the ability to obtain additional new information has been attained, and when further coding is no longer feasible. The following article critiques two … Show more

“…This included ensuring that perspectives were heard from participants with a range of ages, gender, ethnicity, and level of interaction with the intervention. The overall sample enabled diverse intervention views and ensured that the data reached the saturation level [31]. In addition to the interviews, at the end of the treatment, all participants were asked to give their overall feedback on the intervention, to which they could provide open-ended responses.…”

“…Participants were recruited using dscout (dscout Inc), an online/mobile qualitative and market research platform. Although small for behavioral science research, this sample size is consistent with research in the field of human-computer interaction [33] and was assumed to be sufficient for achieving saturation [34][35][36]. This size also enabled enrolling a representative sample of target intervention users with diverse perspectives while adhering to sample size constraints in dscout.…”

“…The interview guides helped to provide rigor. The ability to probe further during interviews provided opportunity to expand on some of the issues or themes that were identified from the course evaluations and reflective essays until data saturation was reached (Fusch & Ness, 2015). Interviews were voluntary and interviewees had the option to withdraw their participation at any time.…”
