Are two informants better than one? Parent–child agreement on the eating styles of children who are overweight

Abstract: Parents and children displayed moderate to good agreement with regard to emotional eating, external eating and restrained eating. However when only one perspective can be assessed, possible biases must be taken into account. In that case, the use of appropriate age-specific norms is indicated.

“…In a pilot study, the phrasing of the original DEBQ was slightly adapted, without modifying the content, to enhance the children's comprehension. The different subscales revealed a stable factor structure, satisfying internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.77-0.91) and a good test-retest reliability (r= 0.87-0.90) (Braet et al, 2008;Braet et al, 2007).…”

“…However, external cues such as the sight of appetizing foods can also evoke a desire to eat, even in the absence of hunger. This external food sensitivity (EFS) varies considerably across individuals, and high EFS has been associated with increased risk for obesity when exposed to a food-rich environment (Braet and Van Strien, 1997;Hörchner et al, 2002;Braet et al, 2007;Burton et al, 2007;Elfhag et al, 2007Elfhag et al, , 2008. Given recent concerns that advertisements and packaging can initiate and maintain increased food intake, identifying the neurobiological basis of EFS is crucial for understanding obesity.…”

“…Parents who have overweight children in the family or perceive their children are at risk of being overweight, usually utilize this practice more. (Fran cis, Hofer and Birch 2001), Keller, Pietrobelli, Johnson and Faith 2006 ), (Fisher and Birch1999) and (Braet, Soetens, Moens, Goossens and Vlierberghe 2007). It seems parents use greater restriction for their overweight girls in compare with the overweight boys (Wardle, Sanderson, Guthrie, Rapoport and Plomin 2002).…”
