“…Nevertheless, it must be emphasized that social support is a multi-dimensional phenomenon and a number of studies have explored its facets and its specific functions [7,14,26]. Furthermore, an important distinction has to be made in cases where social support can be addressed either as a structure reflecting one's rootedness in the social system or from a functional point of view [27]. According to Cohen [28], it is essential when exploring social support that the type of the support reflects the needs of the situation.…”

“…First, the patients were asked whether certain supporting transactions had occurred and how often; second, they were asked how satisfied they had been with the number of these transactions. The patients answered each question on a three-point Likert-type scale (1-3), with a higher score indicating more satisfaction with supportive transactions [27]. The theoretical range was 11-33 for ESS and 7-21 for INS.…”

“…Worse physical function may be associated with sociodemographic factors such as elder age, longer disease duration, a lower education level, being single, and female [9,10]. Functional disability was also positively associated with pain intensity and fatigue severity and negatively correlated with social support [11][12][13]. Studies of RA-related functional disability in developed countries reported some controversial conclusions on sociodemographic factors probably for different socioeconomic status and ethnicity.…”

“…The social support program produced a significant reduction in trait anxiety after treatment only (Bradlex et al, 1987). Moreover, in the European Research on Incapacitating Diseases and Social Support cohort of patients with early RA it was demonstrated that patients with a greater amount of specific social support or a stronger specific support network experienced less functional limitation and less psychological distress (Demange et al, 2004). Controlled studies of RA patients demonstrated that the ability of self-management behaviours (accommodation, active remediation, perseverance) can decrease impact of RA-related stressors (pain, fatigue, physical limitations, joint changes, and symptom unpredictability) to perform life activities (p < 0.01 -0.0001) (Katz et al, 2005).…”
