Are the cometary outbursts caused by impacts with interplanetary vagabonds probable?

Abstract: Abstract. The possibility of impacts and their results in relation to the cometary outbursts between comets and other small bodies in the solar system has been investigated. Taking into consideration certain physical features of cometary nuclei and impacting bodies, the probability of impacts of small bodies moving in the main asteroid belt with hypothetical comets which represent three types: Jupiter family comets, Halley family comets and long period comets has been computed. The probability of impacts betwe… Show more

“…The Deep Impact mission to the Comet 9P/Tempel 1, generally have confirmed many presumptions related to the physics of comets (A'Hearn et al 2005). That is why calculations which were carried out and reviewed in this paper and which are based on the hitherto existing model of a cometary impact with a meteoroid (Gronkowski 2004a), are quite proper to describe the results of such events at least as far as the changes in the cometary brightness are concerned.…”

“…Therefore the destruction processes connected with three hypothetical comets type 'a', 'b' and 'c' which represent the following groups of comets 'Jupiter family comets', 'Halley type comets' and 'long period comets' respectively are considered. The orbital parameters of these objects are the same as in the papers of Gronkowski (2004aGronkowski ( , 2004b.…”

“…Several outburst mechanisms have been proposed, including polymerization of HCN (Rettig et al 1992) and meteoroid impacts (Gronkowski 2004). However, the perhaps most reasonable explanation put forward to date is crystallization of amorphous water ice (Smoluchowski 1981;Prialnik & Bar-Nun 1987).…”
