Are solar maximum fan streamers a consequence of twisting sheet structures?

Abstract: Context. Fan streamers are often observed at low to mid latitudes in the corona at solar maximum, appearing narrow in latitudinal extent near the Sun, and fanning out with height, adopting an approximately linear, but not necessarily radial, configuration above ∼3 R . Aims. We offer arguments to support the conjecture that such structures may sometimes consist of high density, non-uniform sheets, viewed edge-on near the Sun, and twisting to a more face-on alignment by 3 R . Methods. EUV and white light observa… Show more

“…Their plasma properties continue to be intriguing in light of the typical ambient coronal temperatures of at least 10 6 K and densities on the order of a few times 10 8 cm −3 . In eclipse and coronagraph observations, prominences are always seen lying at the base of streamers and their distribution is linked to the large-scale structure of the corona (Morgan & Habbal 2007. Their immediate surroundings are frequently characterized by reduced white light emission, which has led to the commonly used term of "prominence cavity."…”

“…Since the average and standard deviation of brightness, as functions of height, have been calculated for large groups of pixels, the process does not amplify noise within an image. The NRGF has been used as a tool for revealing coronal structure in many studies (Morgan & Habbal 2007a, 2007b, 2010bHe et al 2009;Wang et al 2010;Kienreich et al 2009;Lugaz et al 2009;Frazin et al 2009;Habbal et al 2007Habbal et al , 2011, for example) and has been further developed in the sophisticated Fourier NRGF (Druckmüllerová et al 2011).…”

“…Morgan & Habbal (2007a, 2007b established links between observed structures in coronagraph observations (streamers) with structures viewed in extreme UV in the chromosphere and low corona. QSRT maps will give a much-improved constraint on the shape and position of structures in the corona, and enable a better interpretation of the coronal evolution from the Sun into the heliosphere.…”
