Are problems prevalent and stable in non-clinical populations? Problems and test-retest stability of a patient-generated measure, PSYCHLOPS (Psychological Outcome Profiles), in a non-clinical student sample

Abstract: In straightened times counselling must evidence the changes it promotes on reputable measures. Patient-generated measures complement nomothetic measures and may be nearer the ethos of counselling in eliciting individuals' problems. Scores from such measures from non-clinical samples are rarely reported, making their test-retest stability uncertain. We report the prevalence and stability of selfreported problems using PSYCHLOPS (Psychological Outcome Profiles) in a non-clinical student population. PSYCHLOPS is … Show more

“…Items are summed to provide a total score ranging from 0 to 20. An additional question on the PSYCHLOPS post-treatment questionnaire asks ‘Compared to when you started your sessions, how do you feel now?’ The scale - approved by the Plain English Campaign - has been shown to be valid and reliable [ 60 , 61 ].…”

“…Internal consistency was also good for CORE-OM with values for Cronbach's α almost identical to values found in Ashworth et al (2005) and Kristjansdottir et al (2012). Satisfactory test-retest reliability for PSYCHLOPS has already been demonstrated (Evans et al, 2010). These favorable reliability findings are most likely the result of the nomothetic features of PSYCHLOPS, but using standardized methods like rating scales to construct idiographic instruments is considered particularly important for reliability (Cone, 1986).…”

“…A recent IAPT pilot noted, for example, that the CORE System of evaluation was useful in 'demonstrating reliable and clinical change as well as contextualising a client's difficulties at point of intake and discharge' (Rao et al 2010, p. 2). Others have explored the relationship between DSM-IV and the taxonomy of roles (Rotten 2007) and the use of PSYCHLOPS (Evans et al 2010) in dramatherapy (Haythorne et al 2012).…”
