Are pancarcinoma T and Tn differentiation antigens?

Abstract: Human fetal tissues were studied for presence of immunoreactive Thomsen-Friedenreich (T) and Tn epitopes (EPs) using well-defined anti-T and anti-Tn rodent monoclonal antibodies. T and Tn are universal (pan) carcinoma (CA) markers that are occluded in normal postfetal tissues except in some immunoprivileged enclaves. Immunohistochemical methods using avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase for staining were employed. Tissues between 45 and 117 days after ovulation were studied. In most instances, anti-T and anti-Tn ant… Show more

“…The TF antigen is, however, expressed by fetal epithelia and mesothelia (Barr et al 1989). In addition it is also found on transferrin isolated from human amniotic fluid (van Rooijen et al 1998) and produced by the trophoblast (Streu et al 2000).…”

“…Unmodified Gal␤1-3GalNAc occurs in ϳ90% of all human cancers, including those of the colon, breast, bladder, prostate, liver, ovary, and stomach (56). Besides its remarkable tumor specificity, the Gal␤1-3GalNAc disaccharide is a blood group-related stage-specific oncofetal antigen present during the early fetal phase (5,51,41). It has been shown that Gal␤1-3GalNAc disaccharide and its carrier protein mucin 1 (MUC1) are expressed by the syncytiotrophoblast at the maternal-fetal interface and by extravillous trophoblast cells invading the decidua (20).…”

“…In normal adult human tissues TF epitopes are only expressed in limited amounts and are restricted to a few immunologically privileged sites (Cao et al 1996). The TF antigen is, however, expressed on fetal epithelia and mesothelia (Barr et al 1989), on transferrin from human amniotic fluid (van Rooijen et al 1998) and on trophoblast cells (Richter et al 2000). The TF antigen and its carrier protein mucin 1 (MUC1) are expressed by syncytiotrophoblasts at the materno-fetal interphase and by extravillous trophoblast cells invading the decidua.…”
