Are nasal steroids effective in children with adenoid hypertrophy?

Abstract: Objectives: Chronic nasal obstruction is a common disease of childhood. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy plays an important role in obstructive sleep apnea. The topical use of the aerosolized forms of corticosteroids therefore seems the most appropriate route to decrease systemic side effects. The aim of our study is to demonstrate the effect of topical mometasone furoate especially on the adenoid volume in patients without any allergic story. Methods: The study group consisting of 30 males and 25 females was admini… Show more

“…11 In this study, the adenoid size based on the adenoid/choana ratio was statistically decreased significantly after the use of intranasal mometasone furoate. This was similar with the study conducted by Al-Harbi et al 12 , Solmaz et al 13 , and Yilmaz et al 14 which evaluated the adenoid size based on nasal endoscopy examination.…”

“…Two more recent RCTs reported a significant effect of ICS on the reduction of adenoid tissue and the degree of hypertrophy [111,112]. Finally, in a nonrandomized study, 35 children who had undergone adenoidectomy were treated with MF for 6 months and starting 3 weeks after wound healing compared to 35 children undertaking local saline solution [113].…”

“…However, as the x-ray does not provide a three-dimensional visualization of the tissue volume, the patient was referred to the ENT, which carried out the nasal endoscopy for diagnosis. 21,22 Although the adenoid suffers physiological hypertrophy up to approximately 7 years of age 22,23 , treatment with topical corticosteroids was used for regression of the lymphoid tissue 24 (Figure 7B), as there were already evident craniofacial alterations, such as maxillary constriction.…”
