ABSTRACT:Researches on roadkill aggregations are important tools for wildlife conservation. The objective of this study was to determine wild vertebrate roadkill aggregations on a stretch of 96 kilometers of the BR-050 highway, between the cities of Uberlândia and Uberaba, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The survey was conducted between April 2012 and March 2013. Roadkill monitoring was performed by car, at a speed of approximately 60 km/h, and forty two (42) weekly trips, totaling 8064 km, were performed. The 2D Ripley's K-Statistics test from the Siriema v1.1 program was used to detect the scales of roadkill aggregations and 2D HotSpot Identification test was used to identify the location of these hotspots. Aggregations extended from the following kms: 14 to 33, 38, 41 to 51, 66 to 70 and 78 to 94. We found roadkill aggregations for wild vertebrates and mammals. The roadkill aggregations were significant for Euphractus sexcinctus, Conepatus semistriatus, Procyon cancrivorus, Hydrochoerus hydrochoerus, Cariama cristata, Boa constrictor amarali and Crotalus durissus collilineatus according to the taxonomic specific level. Thus, it is suggested that mitigation measures for vertebrate conservation must be implemented in the indicated areas.

Environmental assessment studies often evaluate the effectiveness of drainage culverts as habitat linkages for species, however, the efficiency of the sampling designs and the survey methods are not known. Our main goal was to estimate the most cost-effective monitoring method for sampling carnivore culvert using track-pads and video-surveillance. We estimated the most efficient (lower costs and high detection success) interval between visits (days) when using trackpads and also determined the advantages of using each method. In 2006, we selected two highways in southern Portugal and sampled 15 culverts over two 10-day sampling periods (spring and summer). Using the track-pad method, 90% of the animal tracks were detected using a 2-day interval between visits. We recorded a higher number of crossings for most species using video-surveillance (n = 129) when compared with the track-pad technique (n = 102); however, the detection ability using the video-surveillance method varied with type of structure and species. More crossings were detected in circular culverts (1 m and 1.5 m diameter) than in box culverts (2 m to 4 m width), likely because video cameras had a reduced vision coverage area. On the other hand, carnivore species with small feet such as the common genet Genetta genetta were detected less often using the trackpad surveying method. The cost-benefit analyzes shows that the track-pad technique is the most appropriate technique, but video-surveillance allows year-round surveys as well as the behavior response analyzes of species using crossing structures.

RESUMO:As colisões entre veículos e animais são um problema de segurança pública e de conservação da biodiversidade. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os acidentes causados por colisões entre veículos e animais, analisando os animais envolvidos, o número de mortos e feridos, além da distribuição espacial e temporal desses acidentes no Brasil. Para tanto, utilizamos como método de amostragem notícias, disponíveis na internet, de acidentes entre veículos e animais registrados no Brasil no período de cinco anos. Analisamos 125 acidentes, que envolveram 135 animais, tendo como consequência 66 pessoas mortas, 166 feridos e 73 animais mortos. O principal resultado foi que a maioria dos acidentes envolveu animais domésticos, acarretando, principalmente, em pessoas feridas. No entanto, os acidentes com animais silvestres levaram mais pessoas a óbito, particularmente aqueles envolvendo capivaras. Além disso, discutimos as medidas mitigadoras mais adequadas e quais setores econômicos poderiam se interessar pelo tema.Palavras-chave: ecologia de estradas; animais domésticos; animais silvestres; segurança; óbitos.ABSTRACT: Wildlife-vehicle collisions are a concern for public security and biodiversity conservation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accidents caused by wildlife-vehicle collisions, analyzing the animals involved, the number of deceased and injured people, as well as the space and time distribution of accidents in Brazil. Therefore, we use as sampling method, news on accidents between vehicles and animals recorded in Brazil over a 5 years period, available on the web. We analyzed 125 accidents including 135 animals, 66 dead people, 166 injured people and 73 dead animals. The main result was that most of the accidents involved domestic animals, causing mainly injured people; however, accidents with wildlife caused more deceases, particularly involving capybaras. In addition, we discussed the most suitable mitigation measures and the economic sectors that could be interested in this issue.
