Are Isofurans and Neuroprostanes Increased After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Traumatic Brain Injury?

Abstract: Current diagnostic tools to assess neurological injury after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) have poor discriminatory abilities. Free radicals are associated with the pathophysiology of secondary damage after brain trauma. We examined cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lipid markers of oxidative stress, isofurans (IsoFs), F 4 -neuroprostanes (F 4 -NeuroPs), and F 2 -isoprostanes (F 2 -IsoPs), in two casecontrolled studies in patients with aSAH or severe TBI. Patients with aSAH… Show more

“…aSAH patients also had significantly increased levels of CSF F 4 -NeuroPs and F 2 -IsoPs. Patients with TBI had significantly increased CSF F 4 -NeuroPs but F 2 -IsoPs were similar to control (Corcoran et al, 2011). These data confirm that CNS injury, in case of aSAH or TBI, results in increased OS and as DHA is the brain major PUFA, F 4 -NeuroP levels in CSF could be a much more specific indicator of neurological dysfunction than F 2 -IsoP.…”

“…The HI induced a significant increase in F 4 -NeuroPs in both the right and the left side of the cerebral cortex [30]. Studies in humans, based on GC-MS analysis of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) samples, have shown that F 4 -NeuroPs were increased in aSAH (aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage) patients and in traumatic brain injury patients compared with their controls [31,32]. In the same sense, a prior study showed that plasma F 4 -NeuroPs were significantly increased in RTT (Rett syndrome) patients compared to controls [33].…”
