“…However, this is not the case in the Mediterranean, where fishing activity, constrained by the limited continental shelves (Gulf of Lion, northern Adriatic Sea, Maltese waters, etc. ), mainly releases plastic items directly on the seafloor 46 , 47 .…”

“…Anchored FADs are largely used in the southern Mediterranean, especially in the coastal areas of Sicily, Tunisia, Malta, and Majorca (Spain) . These devices are normally equipped with palm leaves connected to a float (usually empty plastic bottles or PS-slabs tied together) using synthetic rope or PE/nylon cables for anchoring to large stones or blocks (Andaloro et al, 2007;Sinopoli et al, 2020). In winter, at the end of the fishing season, most FADs are lost (76 %), especially those far from the coast, or destroyed by adverse weather conditions.…”

“…In this work, another digestion protocol was tested on a highly migratory species and an opportunistic and voracious medium pelagic predator, the common dolphinfish, Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758, which is an important fishery resource and represents a target species of medium-scale fishing in several areas of the Mediterranean Sea (Lleonart et al, 1999;Sinopoli et al, 2020). Although some information on the plastic ingestion by common dolphinfish have already been provided through previous dietary or litter studies (Massutí et al, 1998;Deudero and Alomar, 2015;Menezes et al, 2019;Phillips and Bonner, 2015), no chemical digestion has been applied to investigate the presence of plastic in the stomach contents of this species.…”

“…The first source is land-based, i.e., litter is carried into the ocean through rivers and sewage outlets, or it is generated by coastal human activities. The second major source of marine litter is the litter generated by various marine activities (e.g., mariculture, fishery, marine shipping, and marine tourism) that directly discard the litter into the sea [3][4][5]. One study showed that 192 coastal countries and regions in the world discharged from 480 × 10 4 to 1270 × 10 4 t of plastic waste into the ocean every year [6].…”
