“…To assess the game habitat quality, roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) was chosen as a big game indicator. This species is highly demanded in the territorial context (3120 roe deer harvest in Segovia and 244 roe deer harvest in Madrid in the 2013-2014 hunting season, MAGRAMA, 2013) and its habitat requirements comprise other fauna habitat requirements linked to forests (Tixier and Duncan, 1996;San José et al, 1997;Acevedo et al, 2005;Camprodon and Brotons, 2006;Gil-Tena et al, 2007;Mangas et al, 2008). Two indicators were initially defined: Food and Shelter.…”

“…Genetic analyses suggest that the Iberian populations separated from the European pool between isotope stages 5 and 3, and the Italian populations during the LGM 24 . Compared to red deer, roe deer are much more selective in their feeding, and when fruits and seeds are available, they select them or switch to a more browser-based diet 25 . Seasonally, they may also consume grasses 26 but mostly remain typical browsers 17 , 19 .…”
