Are Effect Sizes in Emotional Intelligence Field Declining? A Meta-Meta Analysis

Abstract: Since Salovey and Mayer ( 1990 ) first proposed the emotional intelligence (EI) as an independent intellectual component, research on the field of EI has developed rapidly. A large number of studies have shown that emotional intelligence is an important predictor that affects our lives, such as job performance, mental health, and so on. However, we observed that some effect sizes in the field of emotional intelligence decreased over time. Is this kind of decline simply due to random erro… Show more

“…The replication crisis has also underlined a phenomenon calls the "decline effect" (Schooler, 2011;Simmons et al, 2011;Protzko and Schooler, 2017). It shows that different effects in psychology and medicine tend to diminish with time and replication process (e.g., see Coyne and de Voogd, 2012;Gong and Jiao, 2019). In this regard, it is interesting to note that the psi community has reported such a decline effect a long time ago (Kennedy, 2003).…”

“…Contemporary research on emotions ("dispositions to action, " Lang, 1995), primarily focuses on emotion regulation (McRae and Gross, 2020), emotional intelligence (Gong and Jiao, 2019), and the relationship between emotion and social cognition (Stevens and Jovanovic, 2019). Technological advances have allowed researchers to identify the neurobiological processes underlying the emotions, in particular, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI, Weber-Goericke and Muehlhan, 2019), electrophysiological techniques (Gantiva et al, 2019), and virtual reality (Wechsler et al, 2019).…”
