Are different imaging methods affecting the treatment decision of extractions of mandibular third molars?

Abstract: Objectives: To find the differences between treatment decisions of lower impacted third molars among experts of oral and maxillofacial surgery according to panoramic radiographic and CBCT findings. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 62 panoramic radiographs and CBCT of lower third molars evaluated for treatment decisions by 9 independent experts of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Results: Differences in interpretation of the panoramic radiography were found between surgeons. The absence of radiological signs… Show more

“…Conventional periapical radiographs and orthopantomographs do not permit the exact location of foreign bodies because they show images on a single plane [12]. Radiographs in occlusal takes, such as the total occlusal of the mandible or the Donovan modified technique, can reveal the location in terms of depth as long as the fragment is near the medial wall of the mandibular bone, as was possible to ascertain in the clinical case discussed herein.…”

“…When surgical management is planned, assessment by panoramic radiographs provides sufficient information to determine whether to perform a full extraction or to choose an alternative, for example, coronectomy (Aravindaksha et al, 2015; Manor, Abir, Manor, & Kaffe, 2017; Matzen, Christensen, Hintze, Schou, & Wenzel, 2013). It has been argued that experienced surgeons can decide the surgical approach without CBCT (Baqain et al, 2020).…”
