Are changes in pain associated with changes in heart rate variability in patients treated for recurrent or persistent neck pain?

Abstract: Background Persistent or recurrent neck pain is associated with perturbations in the autonomic nervous system balance, and nociceptive stimulation has been seen to influence this balance. However, very few prospective studies have addressed the extent to which changes in pain associate with changes in autonomic cardiac regulation. Therefore, we investigated if changes in pain vary with changes in heart rate variability in a cohort of patients treated for persistent or recurrent neck pain. … Show more

“…Later the potential effect of heterogeneous trajectories on the outcomes could be measured. The issue of patient-reported outcome (PRO) responses to treatment over time in heterogeneous clinical populations 2 , adolescent smoking trajectories 3 , trajectories of multi-morbidity in primary care 4 , and dose–response and pain trajectories 5 , 6 are examples showing that there exist unobserved subgroups of patients within the population that indicate variability in their treatment responses and have heterogeneous health phenotypes.…”
