Introduction Integrating equity considerations into bicycle infrastructure, planning, and programming is essential to increase bicycling and reduce physical inactivity–related health disparities. However, little is known about communities’ experiences with activities that promote equity considerations in bicycle infrastructure, planning, and programming or about barriers and facilitators to such considerations. The objective of this project was to gain in-depth understanding of the experiences, barriers, and facilitators that communities encounter with integrating equity considerations into bicycle infrastructure, planning, and programming. Methods We administered a web-based survey in 2022 to assess communities’ experiences with 31 equity-focused activities in 3 areas: 1) community engagement, education, events, and programming (community engagement); 2) data collection, evaluation, and goal setting (data); and 3) infrastructure, facilities, and physical amenities (infrastructure). Respondents were people who represented communities in the US that participated in the League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) Program. We then conducted 6 focus groups with a subset of survey respondents to explore barriers and facilitators to implementing equity-focused activities. Results Survey respondents (N = 194) had experience with a mean (SD) of 5.9 (5.7) equity-focused activities. Focus group participants (N = 30) identified themes related to community engagement (outreach to and engagement of underrepresented communities, cultural perceptions of bicycling, and funding and support for community rides and programs); data (locally relevant data); and infrastructure (political will, community design, and infrastructure). They described barriers and facilitators for each. Conclusion Communities are challenged with integrating equity into bicycle infrastructure, planning, and programming. Multicomponent strategies with support from entities such as the BFC program will be required to make progress.

The concept of fostering environmentally conscious urban environments has emerged as a pivotal strategy in mitigating the escalating pace of developmental endeavors. A prominent approach entails the adoption of eco-friendly transportation modalities, prominently featuring non-motorized conveyance options. A tangible stride towards the realization of eco-centric urban landscapes lies in the alteration of societal lifestyles, thereby cultivating heightened environmental consciousness. Across various locales in Indonesia, the prevalent trajectory towards eco-friendly living is epitomized by the widespread embrace of bicycling as a quintessential means to augment communal mobility. This burgeoning proclivity has engendered the establishment of dedicated bicycle infrastructure within urban landscapes, exemplified by communal cycling initiatives and the institution of “Car Free Day” initiatives. Moreover, Pekanbaru City—characterized by its distinctive topography, climate dynamics, and idiosyncratic urban features—presents a distinct milieu that accentuates the complexities entailed in orchestrating widespread bicycle utilization. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore how the deployment of bicycle lanes can be tailored to accommodate the community’s demands for bicycle usage, the demographics of bicycle users, and the appropriateness of bicycle lane integration.

Bicycle transport stands at the forefront of sustainable mobility initiatives, a cornerstone of European Union policy. While support for cycling is crucial, its advancement hinges upon the presence of high-quality, secure infrastructure for cyclists. Safety emerges as a paramount concern, influencing the viability of cycling as a mode of transportation, yet its perception varies among user demographics. In light of this, this article endeavors to examine and contrast cycling infrastructure across various European nations, alongside analyzing statistics pertaining to fatal traffic accidents involving cyclists. The findings underscore a substantial correlation between the quality of cycling infrastructure and the incidence of accidents. This correlation underscores the pressing need for robust infrastructure development and safety measures to bolster cycling as a safe and viable transportation option. By understanding the intricate interplay between infrastructure quality and safety outcomes, policymakers can better prioritize resources and enact measures to foster safer cycling environments, thus furthering the objectives of sustainable mobility on a continental scale.
