Are autistic traits associated with suicidality? A test of the interpersonal‐psychological theory of suicide in a non‐clinical young adult sample

Abstract: Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) has recently been associated with increased risk of suicidality. However, no studies have explored how autistic traits may interact with current models of suicidal behavior in a non‐clinical population. The current study therefore explored how self‐reported autistic traits interact with perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness in predicting suicidal behavior, in the context of the Interpersonal‐Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS). 163 young adults (aged 18–30 year… Show more

“…Unemployment is common among individuals with ASD, and has been posited to relate to high rates of suicidal behavior [e.g., Pelton & Cassidy, 2017]. Thus, it is notable that approximately half (49%) of the individuals with ASD who completed suicide in our sample were listed on their death certificate to either have an occupation or be a student (an additional 40% had no data).…”

“…For example, Culpin et al [] recently identified a significant relationship between social communication impairments and suicidal intent among over 5,000 youth in the U.K. (adjusted RR = 2.14, P = 0.004). In a sample of 163 young adults in the U.K., Pelton and Cassidy [] also found that self‐reported autistic traits predicted suicidal behavior in mediation models, with significant indirect effects found through both perceived burdensomeness ( P = 0.001) and thwarted belonging ( P = 0.001).…”

“…Uljarević et al, ]. Using the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), a self‐reported instrument for the assessment of ASD traits in adults with normal intelligence [Baron‐Cohen, Wheelwright, Skinner, Martin, & Clubley, ], trait severity has also been identified as a predictor of negative mental health, including suicidal behavior [Pelton & Cassidy, ], poor coping and lower quality of life [Pisula, Danielewicz, Kawa, & Pisula, ], depression [Salehzadeh, Nasiri, Barin, & Roshan, ], and social anxiety [Lamport & Zlomke, ] in non‐ASD populations.…”

“…Previous work indicates that ASD-related traits are associated with increased suicide risk (Pelton & Cassidy, 2017), and specifically that military service members with elevated autism symptoms may be at especially high risk for suicide (Stanley et al, 2020). Past work also indicates that unit cohesion may serve as a protective factor among the general military population (Mitchell et al, 2012), but this relationship has not been evaluated in the context of ASD-related traits.…”

“…However, there is also evidence that subclinical manifestations of ASD that are present in the general population, or ASD-related traits, are also associated with increased risk for suicide. For example, there is a demonstrated direct relationship between greater severity of ASD-related traits and global suicide risk (Pelton & Cassidy, 2017). There is also evidence that those with ASD-related traits may have suicidal symptoms comparable to those with ASD.…”
