Abstract

 Design of flapping wing power generator  Experimental investigation of flowstructure interaction  Effect of fore-wing on the performance of the hindwing An experimental study was performed in a water channel for a better improvement to the design of a renewable and sustainable tandem flapping-wing energy generator. Instantaneous vorticity plots for ψ = 0° and non sinusoidal motions of fore and hind wings a) ΔTR-fore = 0.3 ΔTR-hind = 0.3 b) ΔTR-fore = 0.4 ΔTR-hind = 0.4 Purpose: This research aims to put forward the effect of rapid pitch reversal time (ΔTR) of the pitching and plunging foils and the phase angle (ψ) between the two foils' motion on the system's energy efficiency by commenting on productive or destructive power production. Theory and Methods: The experiments were performed in a water channel using PIV technique to investigate the flow structures around and in the near wake of the flapping foils with simultaneous force measurements. Instantaneous and average vorticity plots were given and associated with mean power coefficient variations of the hind wing. Results: When the fore wing and the hind wing motions are equal, the maximum power can be attained with sinusoidal motion (ΔTR = 0.5) and ψ = 135° phase angle. When the fore wing performs sinusoidal motion, the pitch reversal time ΔTR-hind = 0.4 case can produce power in addition to the power produced by the fore wing when the phase angle is between 45° ≤ ψ ≤ 180°. Conclusion: Tandem flapping wing power generation system can maximize energy production by productive vortex interactions. More effective energy production in a tandem flapping wing system can be achieved by using a sinusoidal pitching and plunging fore wing.
