Today, silicon chips are becoming more and more powerful despite the reduction in size. Various general processors and graphic processing units (GPUs) have been embedded in countless electronic gadgets such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile hand-phone, digital cameras, and etc. With the high processing power of these embedded platforms and ever increasing size of both volatile and non-volatile storage, it opens up a great opportunity to integrate computer vision (CV) applications to these relatively low-cost and standalone devices. Applying CV applications inside electronic gadgets can be the next trends in industrial or commercial market. These devices can do specific smart and intelligent job such as object or text recognition for manufacturing, surveillance and security, as well as entertainment. It is discovered that there is yet to have a standard embedded software or hardware architecture in embedded systems (ES) for CV. An open architecture is needed for CV researchers to develop CV application without worrying the underlying embedded platform or CV library dependency in ES. This project provides a preliminary study of embedded computer vision (ECV) and design of a single common ECV platform using ARM-9 embedded processor. Abstract-The power consumption of a streaming-media server can be obtained in real time by using the virtual-instrumentation software described in this paper without using an additional hardware meter. We have built a model to estimate the power consumption from the observation of experimental data that consists of tracking the CPU utilization and detecting the operation parameters of the measured servers. When calculated in real time, the CPU utilization can respond to the dynamic change of the power consumption of the measured servers. The operation parameters represent the hardware configuration of the measured servers. We also propose three methods to obtain these parameters: filledmanually, hardware-revised, and software-revised parameter estimating. We have constructed the virtual-instrumentation software according to this power model to measure the power consumption of the streaming-media server. To facilitate the measurement process, we have also designed a suitable graphic-user interface for it. Our virtual-instrumentation software with three parameterestimating methods has been tested by way of comparison with measurement results obtained by a power meter. The average power values of the hardware-revised method are found to yield mean errors of the estimate within 3%. The mean error of the software-revised method is within 6%. However, the filledmanually method may underestimate the power consumption by as much as 11%.

Hosting Internet streaming services has its unique challenges. Aiming at making Internet streaming services be widely and easily adopted in practice, in this paper, we have designed and implemented a system, called SProxy that can leverage existing Internet infrastructure to free the streaming content providers so that they only need to host streaming content through a regular Web server. SProxy has been extensively tested and evaluated and it provides high quality streaming delivery in both local area networks and wide area networks (e.g. between Japan and US).
