SUMMARY ThetextitService Component Architecture (SCA) is a technology‐independent standard for developing distributed Service‐oriented Architectures (SOA). The SCA standard promotes the use of components and architecture descriptors, and mostly covers the lifecycle steps of implementation and deployment. Unfortunately, SCA does not address the governance of SCA applications and provides no support for the maintenance of deployed components. This article covers this issue and introduces the FRASCATI platform, a run‐time support for SCA with dynamic reconfiguration capabilities and run‐time management features. This article presents the internal component‐based architecture of the FRASCATI platform, and highlights its key features. The component‐based design of the FRASCATI platform introduces many degrees of flexibility and configurability in the platform itself and it can host the SOA applications. This article reports on micro‐benchmarks highlighting that run‐time manageability in the FRASCATI platform does not decrease its performance when compared with the de facto reference SCA implementation: Apache TUSCANY. Finally, a smart home scenario illustrates the extension capabilities and the various reconfigurations of the FRASCATI platform. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We combine and extend recent results in autonomic computing and structured peer-to-peer to build an infrastructure for constructing and managing dynamic virtual organizations. The paper focuses on the middle layer of the proposed infrastructure, in-between the Niche overlay system on the bottom, and an architecturebased management system based on Jade on the top. The middle layer, the overlay services, are responsible for all sensing and actuation carried out by the VO management. We describe in detail the API of the resource and component overlay services both on the management node and the nodes hosting resources. We present a simple use case demonstrating resource discovery, initial deployment, self-configuration as a result of resource availability change, self-healing, self-tuning and self-protection. The advantages of the design are 1) the overlay services are in themselves self-managing, and sensor/actuation services they provide are robust, 2) management can be dealt with declaratively and at a high-level, and 3) the overlay services provide good scalability in dynamic VOs.

Abstract. Today, service providers need to develop competitive applications for a quick time-to-market to attract and retain end users. To facilitate the task of developers, we introduce a reference Service Creation Environment based on service component and self-management mechanisms. This environment uses a fairly high integration level using meta-modeling techniques and exchange formats: Meta-Object Facility (MOF), Extensible Markup Language (XML), OVF ++ (Open Virtualization Format). Our approach allows developers to design the basic service components based on Quality of Service (QoS), to build the service by composition, and to manage a mobile session by ubiquitous services and the Virtual Service Community.
