Architectural lighting design: A research review over 50 years

Abstract: Architectural developments over the past fifty years have been dramatic and have been paralleled by active research in lighting. This review traces architectural themes and the corresponding concerns of lighting researchers and explores how they have applied the results of scientific research into lighting design and application.

“…It could offer input to increase interest in the psychological effects in identifying the way in which lighting can benefit a desirable outcome (Boyce 2014). Current research on the illumination hierarchy that expresses visual significance of the content of spaces appears to be relevant for a semiotic perspective (Mansfield 2018). The importance of the interpretative-historical research became obvious in studies that examined cultural phenomena with changes of meaning through time or relationships between different fields such as art, retail, and lighting (Neumann 2002;Salomon 2014).…”

“…To celebrate its 50th birthday, LRT released a special issue to introduce the achievements of multiple subareas of lighting research, 5 including non-visual effects of light, 6 light measurement instrumentation, 7 architectural lighting design, 8 CIE colour appearance models, 9 daylighting in buildings, 10 light controls, 11 road lighting, 12 vision 13 and visual discomfort. 14 In 1998, Marsden listed papers published in LRT which had won the Leon Gaster awards and Walsh-Weston awards and selected the top 20 papers published during the first 30 years since LRT's inception 15 and Cannon-Brookes et al .…”

“…Further searches were carried out to look for recent publications, in particular how lighting might influence general wayfinding, crowd behaviour and the design of architectural spaces. 29 These searches used similar keywords and the search terms linked to the main characteristics of lighting (e.g. intensity, colour, movement) that were emerging during the course of the review.…”
