Architectural layout design optimization

Abstract: This article presents an optimization model of the quantifiable aspects of architectural floorplan layout design, and a companion article presents a method for integrating mathematical optimization and subjective decision making during conceptual design. The model presented here offers a new approach to floorplan layout optimization that takes advantage of the efficiency of gradient-based algorithms, where appropriate, and uses evolutionary algorithms to make discrete decisions and do global search. “…Increasing creativity can also be attributed to the fact that computers can generate complex forms that could not be envisioned by human design 12 . Several alternative oriented design approaches were already suggested by Grobman et al [57], Kim et al [58] (for optimization in structural engineering), and by Frazer [42], 548 Yasha Jacob Grobman, Abraham Yezioro and Isaac Guedi Capeluto 11 Scripting in this context refers to both writing code and using visual code applications such as Grasshopper [69]. 12 See also Eisenman's argument on the possible benefits of using computer as a creative design tool [70].…”

“…Space allocation 2 aims to lay out spaces and activities in a building according to rational principles [3].While space allocation approaches for design were developed mainly in 1960-1980 3 , some research is still being done in this field (an example is the work by Michalek et al [11]). Many of the earlier approaches concentrated on generating building plans from programmatic information.…”

“…The constraints are simply too restrictive, and stochastically navigating the solution space will not result in a valid solution. For example, Michalek et al [2002] report that even for moderate floorplan layouting problems comprising about ten independent rooms, simulated annealing may often find no solution, and we have significantly more regions and constraints.…”

“…More recently, Michalek et al [2] have been developing a system for 2D-layout design using optimization techniques based on simulated annealing and sequential quadratic programming. Similarly to Loos and Wright, this system addresses automated space allocation conceived as 2D placement of functional spaces or objects within an orthogonal 2D representation of a rectangular room or building floor-plan.…”
