The Pinelo House-Palace, a singular Renaissance building in Seville, was transformed to be a guest house known as Pensión Don Marcos between 1885 and 1964. Between 1969 and 1981, it was restored by the architect Rafael Manzano Martos to host the new headquarters of the Reales Academias Sevillanas de Buenas Letras y de Bellas Artes. In order to analyze the restoration process, the architect’s private archive and other related sources have been investigated. The material available has been compared with modern photographs and plans to evaluate the extent and criteria of the restoration accomplished in coffered ceilings, plaster works and other elements of new construction. In 2010 Rafael Manzano was awarded with the Driehaus Prize by the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture to honor his contributions in the advocacy of architectural heritage and traditions, introducing a new award with his name in Spain and Portugal.

“…Desnaturalizados de su propio reino se dirigieron al sultanato nazarí de Granada y allí fueron recibidos por el fundador de la dinastía que firmó con ellos un pacto de ayuda mutua, y cedió Darabenaz al conde don Nuño. Ésta ha sido la versión acrítica que ha venido copiándose desde que la lanzara en 1961 Rafael Manzano en base a los datos de Almagro, a su vez inspirados por el erudito local don Blas Leoncio de Píñar 75 . Pero en la crónica de Alfonso X, que narra profusamente toda esta revuelta, no se mencionan nunca Darabenaz 76 .…”

La revisión de los textos que narran la rebelión nobiliaria de 1272 contra Alfonso X y el asentamiento de las huestes militares de don Nuño González de Lara en la vega de Granada ha permitido conocer la imposibilidad actual de identificar los Palacios de don Nuño. Durante el siglo XIX dos corrientes históricas han buscado su ubicación en dos espacios diferentes; de un lado el palacio de Alcázar Genil, de otro la almunia de Darabenaz. Ninguna de las dos se basa en documentación coetánea. La adjudicación a la almunia del siglo XIII, que hoy se sigue dando por válida, procede de un autor interesado que escribió más de trescientos cincuenta años después. El repaso a las fuentes ha permitido conocer que los Palacios de don Nuño subsistían todavía a finales del siglo XIV o principios el XV. Se esboza la posibilidad de que las construcciones encontradas junto a la carretera de La Zubia pudieran formar parte de estos desconocidos palacios
