Abstract: Very important terms of fatigue testing, i.e, fatigue strength and minimum life, are often interpreted ambiguously. To avoid this, introduction of compulsory definitions of these terms with regard to statistical methods of planning tests and analyzing their results seems to be urgent. The arc sine x/-ff transformation, which until now has proved to be an outstanding evaluation method with special regard to engineering purposes, is reviewed. Both the numerical and the graphical way of evaluation is discussed an… Show more

“…In terms of the fatigue strength assessment, the statistical evaluation in the finite-life region is conducted by application of the common procedure ASTM-E739 [54]. Moreover, the endurance limit region is evaluated by means of the arcsin √ P methodology [55]. Further, the second slope k 2 is set to a value of 45 as suggested in [56,57].…”

“…Run-out specimens are re-inserted and tested again at a higher load level to provoke a burst failure. Regarding the statistical assessment of the fatigue strength, the standard [54] is applied in the finite-life and the arcsine √ P approach [55] is utilized in the long life fatigue region. The results of the high-cycle fatigue tests considering both load stress ratios are illustrated in Figures 14 and 15 in terms of filled circles and triangles.…”

“…In addition, the finite fatigue life regime was by selecting two load amplitudes each covered by five fatigue tests. The respectively resulting cycleto-failure-distributions were evaluated by the method given in [7] yielding the values for 50%failure probability in each case which finally are used to plot the descending lines depicted in Fig. 7 characterizing the left hand part of the Woehler curves.…”

“…To properly interpret the test results, planning of the fatigue tests as well as a statistical evaluation of the results is of vital importance. [20] While stress-controlled fatigue tests, which results are displayed in S-N-curves, are more engineering related, straincontrolled tests also consider materials physics. During the fatigue in stress-controlled tests the strain changes due to cyclic hardening or softening.…”
