Arbovirus circulation among febrile patients at the greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ghana

Abstract: Objective Arboviruses, Dengue and Chikungunya have become major international public health concerns due to their epidemics and introduction in new areas. In Ghana, little is known is about Dengue and Chikungunya viruses though the country has been listed as part of the 34 countries in which the viruses are endemic. This has been attributed partly to the lack of diagnostic tools for these viruses in several health facilities and institutions across the country. The purpose of this study was to det… Show more

“…With no statistical associations, the most commonly reported clinical symptoms among the chikungunya and malaria infections aside from the febrile condition were headache, muscular pains, chills, shivering & sweating joint pains, and nausea/vomiting. This result is in line with that of other studies [22,26,29,31]. The current study did not record any positive signal for either chikungunya virus, dengue virus, or Zika virus RNA detection by RT-qPCR-a similar observation was reported here in Ghana by Manu et al, [22].…”

The current study did not record any positive signal for either chikungunya virus, dengue virus, or Zika virus RNA detection by RT-qPCR-a similar observation was reported here in Ghana by Manu et al, [22]. Dash et al, (2011) pointed out that the detection of chikungunya viral RNA is from the day of infection or onset of symptoms to day 7, after which acute infections detection is limited [36].…”

“…aegypti populations confirmed the autochthonous urban transmission of dengue in urban cities as Ouagadougou. They were more or least overlapping with human infections patterns where DENV-2 and DENV-3 serotypes were the most detected in humans [29][30][31][32] but exceptionally DENV-4 was reported by Ridde et al [23] together with DENV-2 and DENV-3. The presence of DENV-2 was also found in the blood of febrile travellers returning from Burkina Faso to France during this period [24].…”
