“…The paste thus remains edible in the pits for many years. Regional variations in the methods of preparation have been extensively described for other Pacific countries (Atchley and Cox 1985;Cox 1980;Pollock 1992;Ragone 1991Ragone , 2002Yen 1974). In Vanuatu, breadfruit fermentation seems to have once been widespread in the central and southern islands, the Polynesian outliers Futuna and Aniwa, as well as on Malo.…”

“…Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a traditional staple crop and an important component of Pacific Island agrosystems (Barrau 1958;Ragone 1997;Yen 1974). In the past it was a key element for islanders' food security thanks to the potential of the tree to produce high yields under low-input conditions.…”

“…Prebble (2008) found that Aleurites moluccana, Broussonetia papyrifera, Cocos nucifera, and Cordyline fruticosa were introduced as cultivated trees or shrubs on many subtropical islands in the South Pacific. This transportation and cultivation of woody species into remote Oceania stands in contrast to the extensive utilization of rain forest species, including many species of Pandanus, palms, and tropical hardwoods, in the Indo-Malayan peninsula and in Melanesia (Barrau 1963, Yen 1974, Denham et al 2003. Similarly, most of the herbaceous Polynesian cultigens found in Tonga are derived from Melanesia or Southeast Asia.…”

“…Botanical, linguistic, and archaeological data indicate that A. altilis breadfruit was introduced into eastern Micronesia from the south. The Santa Cruz Islands, which seem a likely source for much of early Nuclear Micronesia's origins, are characterized by dense agroforest that is in many ways similar to that of Pohnpei and Kosrae, although arboriculture there relies on a wider range of tree crops (Yen 1974;Athens et al 1996); "The greatest diversity of seeded and few-seeded cultivars is found in the eastern Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, and it was probably in the Santa Cruz and possibly the Banks Islands that breadfruit was first extensively cultivated and selected" (Ragone 1997: 19). These first trees were of course limited to the A. camansi-86 derived altilis vaneties.…”
